The Rise of Self-Led Leadership: How Compassion and Curiosity Drive Organisational Success

Oct 09, 2024

In today’s fast-changing world, traditional leadership models that rely on authority and control are becoming outdated. Instead, a new approach—self-led leadership—is gaining traction, with an emphasis on curiosity, compassion, and psychological safety. This shift is not only essential for well-being but also for long-term organisational success.

My Journey into Self-Led Leadership

My journey began in the corporate world, where I worked as a systems analyst in a fast-paced environment. I quickly realised that while systems could be efficient, they often lacked the human-centred approach necessary for individuals to truly thrive. After transitioning into social work, therapy, and eventually founding Concinnity, I made it my mission to help organisations and individuals integrate leadership that fosters connection, curiosity, and well-being.

Over the years, I’ve seen the immense impact that compassionate, self-led leadership can have on teams. Leaders who prioritise curiosity and psychological safety create environments where employees feel valued, empowered, and engaged. This approach aligns perfectly with the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model, which I have found to be a powerful framework for both personal and professional growth.

What Is Self-Led Leadership?

At its core, self-led leadership is about cultivating curiosity, compassion, and self-awareness in both leaders and their teams. Rather than relying on rigid hierarchies or top-down control, self-led leaders encourage open dialogue, embrace diverse perspectives, and create an atmosphere where psychological safety is prioritised.

Self-led leadership is deeply rooted in the IFS model, which teaches us that our minds are made up of multiple parts, each with a protective role. By leading from the core Self—characterised by qualities like compassion and curiosity—leaders can create a culture where employees feel safe to contribute their best work.

The Power of Curiosity in Leadership

Curiosity is a critical component of self-led leadership. It encourages leaders to ask, “What am I missing? How can I learn from this? What can my team teach me?” In a workplace where curiosity is nurtured, employees feel empowered to explore new ideas, challenge the status quo, and contribute creatively to solutions.

Through my work with organisations, I’ve witnessed how curiosity shifts workplace dynamics. Teams become more collaborative, conflict resolution improves, and engagement rises. When leaders lead with curiosity, they not only model openness and flexibility, but they also foster a culture of continuous learning and growth.

Compassion and Psychological Safety

Compassionate leadership is the foundation of psychological safety—the sense that it’s safe to speak up, take risks, and make mistakes. Leaders who prioritise compassion create environments where individuals feel valued and supported, allowing for greater creativity and productivity.

In my career, I’ve worked in various settings, from implementing domestic violence intervention models to leading well-being initiatives in crisis recovery. These experiences have shown me that when leaders cultivate psychological safety, teams come together more effectively, even in the most challenging situations.

Why Self-Led Leadership Drives Organisational Success

In the modern workplace, stress, uncertainty, and burnout are ever-present challenges. Organisations need leaders who guide their teams not with fear or pressure but with empathy, curiosity, and resilience. Self-led leadership transforms workplace culture by creating systems that encourage exploration and learning, which in turn drives productivity and innovation.

At Concinnity, we’ve helped organisations across industries embrace self-led leadership, leading to tangible improvements in employee engagement, conflict resolution, and overall performance. By enhancing existing systems rather than reinventing the wheel, we support leaders in cultivating environments that prioritise psychological safety and curiosity.

When curiosity and compassion are at the centre of leadership, teams thrive, productivity soars, and organisations experience long-term success. Most importantly, employees feel connected to their work and supported in their growth.
